The pandemic, which first left millions of Americans jobless, also put employed retail associates on the front lines. Heralded as heroes in the beginning, now almost two years later, many frontline workers are worn down. The “Great Resignation” now splashes headlines, as people quit their jobs at record rates.

When looking at RIS’ breakdown, lululemon, Trader Joe’s, and H E B took the top three spots, heralded for things like benefits, scheduling flexibility, and pay.

While the number of job openings decreased to 10.6 million on the last business day of November, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the quits rate (voluntary separations initiated by the employee) increased to 3%, matching a series high last seen in September. Retail Trade’s rate was higher, at 4.4%. Yet Retail added 7% fewer holiday hires in 2021 compared to the previous year, while transportation and warehousing was down just .14%, according to Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

Attracting and retaining talented retail employees is now a top-of-mind issue for the retail industry. To discover who is getting it right, Glassdoor has published its 14th annual Employees’ Choice Awards, honoring the Best Places to Work in 2022 across the U.S. and four other countries. The Glassdoor Employees’ Choice Awards are based on the input of employees who voluntarily provide anonymous feedback on Glassdoor by completing a company review about their job, work environment and employer over the past year.

“The world of work is rapidly evolving, fueled by the pandemic and now millions of workers reevaluating their expectations of employers,” said Glassdoor CEO Christian Sutherland-Wong. “This year’s Best Places to Work winners are leading the way by listening and responding to employee feedback and reimagining the employee experience to truly put their people first. It’s inspiring to see these employers step up during the pandemic to expand and grow company cultures where employees feel supported and valued in and out of work.”

The Glassdoor Employees’ Choice Awards feature six distinct categories, including honors for the Best Places to Work across the U.S., Canada, UK, France and Germany. In the U.S., Glassdoor has revealed the 100 Best Places to Work (honoring employers with 1,000 or more employees) and 50 Best Small & Medium Companies to Work For (honoring employers with fewer than 1,000 employees).

Of the top four industries to grace the full list, retail tied for second place: Technology (40 companies), Retail (9 companies), Manufacturing (9 companies), Finance (7 companies). [Editor’s note: While RIS included them on the below list, Glassdoor lists Estee Lauder and Malour as manufacturing companies, and eBay and Apple as technology companies.]

When looking at RIS’ breakdown, lululemon, Trader Joe’s, and H E B took the top three spots, heralded for things like benefits, scheduling flexibility, and pay. Workers said things like:

“Culture, good pay, growth opportunities, schedule flexibility and bonus pay.” — H E B Beauty Department Manager (McAllen, TX)

Common themes across the entire list include continued communication and support amid COVID-19; flexible working environments; transparent senior leadership plus access to executives; good health benefits and perks; and mission-driven company cultures.
