Neiman Marcus adds to store closing list

Neiman Marcus has added a fifth store to its closing list as part of its Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization.

Its 130,000-square-foot store in the Mazza Gallerie shopping center will close in the northwest Washington, D.C., neighborhood of Friendship Heights, according to a court filing late Friday.

Last month, Neiman Marcus said it will close its New York Hudson Yards mall store that’s been open only since March 2019 and focus its efforts in Manhattan online and from its Bergdorf Goodman locations.

There’s one more store in the Washington, D.C., market at Tysons Galleria in McLean, Va., that opened in 1990, and it is not closing. The Mazza Gallerie store, which opened in 1978, was one of the first the Dallas-based luxury retailer opened outside of Texas.

Neiman Marcus had earlier put the D.C. lease up for sale, but when it named its store closings last month, it wasn’t on that list. Other Neiman Marcus stores closing are in Bellevue, Wash., and Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach, Fla.

The three-level Hudson Yards store, which is the largest Neiman Marcus store that’s closing, and the others are holding closing sales.

Neiman Marcus is also in the process of closing 17 Last Call outlet stores. The retailer filed for bankruptcy in May, and its confirmation hearing to exit Chapter 11 is in early September.

Neiman Marcus stepped up its digital and personal shopping strategy during the pandemic. It will exit Chapter 11 with two Bergdorf Goodman stores in New York, five Last Call stores in Texas, California and Florida to handle clearance, the Horchow catalog and 38 full-line Neiman Marcus stores.

It also sheds about $4 billion in debt that required interest payments that cut into the company’s ability to be profitable.
