As a work-from-home, home-schooling mom of two preparing to move to a new house, life has been just a tad stressful of late. Okay, super stressful. It’s mostly the good kind of stress, but my nerves are still shot. Did I get today’s lesson planned? When is our next house showing? Was that a deadline I just heard whooshing by? The answer to all of these questions is: I have no idea.
Bellabeat Leaf UrbanIn the midst of all this, I tested Bellabeat’s new Leaf Urban wearable, which has coincidentally added a stress-prediction feature to its app.
The original Leaf (now known as the Leaf Nature) and the Urban can track your breathing via app-based breathing and meditation exercises, so I assumed the stress-prediction option would have something to do with my breathing patterns. However, this is not the case. Bellabeat’s algorithm takes into account my recent sleep habits, the amount of exercise I’ve been getting, where I am in my menstrual cycle, and how much time I’m spending with the app’s breathing and meditation exercises to determine how resistant I am to stress on any given day.
Because I was expecting real-time stress evaluation based on my breathing, I was a little disappointed at first. But as I spent more time with the app, I realized I am pretty happy with how it’s all set up. This is just a prediction tool, and because I can see the different values that are affecting my stress resistance, I can make positive changes before I get too overwhelmed. The flip side of that coin is that I can be aware of those days when I might need to make a conscious effort to extend myself and my family a little extra grace.
Bellabeat Leaf Urban App
Very often, when I wake up in the morning I immediately sync my Leaf with the app. It tracks my sleep, so I know right away whether I was restless during the night, whether I got enough sleep, and whether stress might be an issue for me during the day. As a result, I’m encouraged to start the day with a breathing exercise or meditation, and it makes me want to exercise (or at least strongly consider exercising) in order to bring that stress-prediction number down.
Bellabeat Leaf Urban AppTurning stress reduction into a game has been surprisingly effective for me and my competitive nature. I’m much more aware of habits that affect my mental health. After all, I don’t need an app or tracker to tell me that I am already stressed out; I need someone to tell me when I’m not taking good enough care of myself, so I can make adjustments. That’s exactly what Bellabeat’s stress-prediction feature does for me.
The stress-prediction feature is available for the Leaf Urban and the Nature, but there are a few physical differences between the two models. The Leaf Nature has a raw leather strap that was rough against my skin; for me, the Urban’s wrist strap is smoother and more comfortable. The Urban also sports a stronger clothing clip than the Nature; it’s water-resistant, but it won’t hold up in the pool.
I’ve had my share of wellness trackers, and the Leaf is the only one I actually enjoy wearing (I get so many compliments). It not only makes me feel pretty… it makes me feel better. The stress and meditation features are helping me to find some calm in the chaos that is this time in my life.
The Bellabeat Leaf Urban is on sale now for $139; the Leaf Nature is $119.
