A new commercial complex that will feature a Tim Hortons restaurant is under construction near the Great Blue Heron casino as the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation look to expand their business interests.
Construction began this fall on the new complex, located directly across the road from the casino at 21777 Island Rd., and is expected to open in March. Soil issues and weather will delay the opening, which MSIFN officials had originally hoped for February.
The first phase of the commercial complex will also include a gas station and convenience store which will feature local crafts.
The Tim Hortons will be a full-sized restaurant with a drive-through.
“The community was looking at more diverse and increased ways for economic development and we wanted to do something to complement the casino facility,” said Kelly LaRocca, chief of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.
The MSIFN have also purchased Jeff’s Centre Island Store, located just south of the casino. That deal will close in January, said Chief LaRocca.
A second phase for the commercial development is also being considered, added the chief. Depending on what the community supports, she said plans call for an office building and car wash to be added to the complex across from the casino in the future.
“We’re doing a little bit of forward-thinking and master-planning,” said Chief LaRocca.
