USA: NYC pharmacy intros ‘man tax’ to highlight gender price differences

Gothamist is reporting that New York City pharmacy Thompson Chemists has launched a unique promotion, with signs saying that male customers will be subject to a 7% “man tax.” The “man tax” is actually the owner’s way of protesting what many call the “pink tax” — the 7% more that products marketed to women in New York cost than those marketed to men, according to a New York City Department of Consumer Affairs — by offering a 7% discount to women, which more or less cuts out sales tax. “So far, the women are very, very happy,” owner Jolie Alony told Gothamist. “Men haven’t complained yet, they’ve just laughed.”
